Béla Bartók's Mikrokosmos consists of 153 progressive piano pieces in six volumes written between 1926 and 1939. My work is a graphic transcription of this huge work that combines typography and visualization of the music.
COSMOS I SPACE I PLANETS I GRAVITY I DARKNESS
1. PART - Audiovisualization of the six volumes
In my case, each of the six parts are displayed by geometric elements which are made up of a dotted grid-system (this is meant to symbolize the structure of the cosmos). Titles of the sections appear on the generated shapes’ surfaces ( this reflects on the surface inequality of the celestial bodies ), which has been in motion by frequency of the music. As a result, the graphics of the six parts are the randomly selected frames of the motion graphics.
2. PART - Editorial design with 3D printed slipcase using the first part's elements
Continuation of the generated objects, snatching them from the virtual space to present themselves in a tangible form. My goal was to create a special edition for Mikrokosmos that conveys the kind of the music and my association of ideas in connection with this musical work and also give an entirely new visual experience for piano students compared to the usual music booklets.
A 3D printed slipcase holds together the six booklets and the geometric shapes i used at the beginning of the project appear on its surface again, rising out gently from the cover.
