1. About the project

Austral Sans is a hand-drawn layered font designed by Antipixel. Based in the Slab version, it is part of the Austral type family. This sans makes your work unique & noteworthy, because the possibilities of combinations of textures & styles create distictive results. Austral Sans comes in three weights, Regular, Light & Thin, which all share the same crooked look with irregular strokes and outlines.
For these reasons this font can be used in a vast variety of projects, such as logos & branding, stationery, book covers, magazine design, clothing prints & tags, packaging, animated videos, and many more!

Austral Sans has three sets of alphabets in uppercase and lowercase to avoid repeating the same character pattern, and giving the font a more natural handwritten feel. This is included in the Open-Type Contextual Alternates, which applies an automatic substitution of glyphs as long as the Open-Type features are activated. Also, Austral Sans offers other Open-Type features such as Stylistic Alternates, Ligatures, Discretionary Ligatures, Fractions, Superscript, Subscript, Denominator, Numerator, Scientific Inferiors & Kerning.

This font has a very large glyph coverage and can be used in a wide range of languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Polish, Czech, Vietnamese, Finnish, Icelandic, among many others.

The style Maplines Thin is offered Free for commercial & personal use!

2. About the client

Antipixel is a graphic design studio based in Buenos Aires, with main focus on display handwritten fonts, branding & web design.
With a collection of energetic and hand rendered typeface offerings, Antipixel is run by Julia Martínez Diana, graphic designer graduated from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The designs possess a spirited quality, full of energy and casual character.

It all started with "Belta" and the "Aracne" collection, which features three widths for maximum functionality. With slightly scrawled letterforms, available in regular, light and italics, it will provide a personal and unique look to your work.

Then came "Italo", a font with upper and lower case, exploring the world of OpenType features, including ligatures, alternates, smallcaps, scientific superior/inferior figures, oldstyle figures, fractions.

Alongside, "Eneas" and "Lamiar" made its way. The Eneas collection features stout, exceptionally extended characters with quirkily uneven strokes.

In the first months of 2014, "Enyo" was released. This decorative, fun, serif, handwritten font specially designed for display usage can also be used for small ammount of text. Available in Light, Regular and Medium, this font supports a wide range of languages, including the Greek and Cyrillic alphabets!

In 2015, "LeOsler" was launched. Being the biggest family of Antipixel so far, composed of 16 styles, this font made its way through the HotNewFonts of MyFonts, for the whole month of June 2015. LeOsler‘s OpenType features include ligatures for all repeated characters in upper & lowercase, contextual alternates for all supported alphabets, 4 ampersand alternates, scientific superior/inferior figures, fractions, etc.

"Austral Slab" was published in July 2016 after nine months of process. This font comes in three weights, Regular, Light & Thin, with irregular outlines and uneven/crooked strokes, giving your work more personality and making it exclusive and powerful. With three sets of alphabets in uppercase and lowercase to avoid repeating the same character pattern, and giving the font a more natural handwritten feel.
In October 2016 the sans version of Austral Sans came out.

4. Creative process

Austral Sans is based in the design of Austral Slab. This font‘s structure was first drawn with pencil, and then traced with markers to make the different weights. After that, it was scanned and drawn roughly in the first vector version. Then it was finally vectorized in the font software with all the details & textures. Finally, kerning and Open-Type programming were done.

*The irregular strokes of this font are inspired by the silhouettes of mountains, treelines, old broken wood, among others.
The textures this font offers are inspired by rust, water and humidity drip marks, dirt, maps, road lines, and many other objects and textures I found from July 2015 to April 2016, living in San Juan, Argentina, and traveling to Mendoza, Córdoba and Monte Hermoso (Buenos Aires).
